I have found the term "southern rock" to be used rather loosely in popular culture, and thought this topic might make for an interesting discussion thread. Have any scholars tried to define the genre specifically? I am somewhat of a newcomer to music history and am not familiar with many sources. I have seen the term 'southern rock" used to describe bands such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers, the Charlie Daniels Band, Molly Hatchet, and others. This seems fitting, perhaps, in that these bands emerged from the South at relatively the same time and often featured songs that depicted the region. I have also seen the term "southern rock" used to describe bands such as the Eagles and Creedence Clearwater Revival, both of which were from California but nonetheless strongly influenced by southern music. Would anyone like to weigh in? Nick Linville Gainesville, FL
